Black Belt Attitude: Resilience

“Man never made any material as resilient as the human spirit.” — Bernard Williams

I hope everyone has had a great Easter and managed to enjoy the break. For some it’s now back to work for a few days, for others the holidays continue … either way I know that sometimes it feels as though the days just keep rolling into one other with no end in sight. So pause and take a moment right now to reflect on all that you have accomplished so far this year – you may just surprise yourself with how much you have already done.

Each week we discuss a Black Belt Attitude topic with the kids in our Warrior Talk, this week is on Resilience. Please pass this on to as many people as you can. Like dropping a pebble in a pond, the ripples can have a significant effect on someone else’s life.

From Sensei Andy Dickinson (founder of Northstar Ju Jitsu):
“All of us have had to weather hard times, it is a part of life. Good and bad work off of each other. In Taoist philosophy it says that in order to feel the good you must know or have felt the bad. No one wants bad but you can’t avoid it, it happens to us all eventually …

The dojo is a place where we can learn about resilience. Just by turning up week in and week out you are building emotional muscle. Maintaining equilibrium requires a balanced life. Whenever I feel that I am pushing too hard in a particular way I will temper it by choosing the opposite direction. Too much yang (hard training, hard living, fixed ways of thinking) must be counter balanced with yin (soft training, time out, flexible and forgiving.” Read more from Andy Sensei …

TERM DATES AND SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
With school holidays fast approaching, please take note of the following Term dates (a reminder that there are no kid’s classes during the holidays):

Last class for Term 1: Tuesday April 5
First class for Term 2: Saturday April 23

Please note for Term 2 that Saturday classes will begin 1 week earlier than usual to make up for the class we miss with Easter this weekend.

As usual to finish the Term with a bit of fun, the final kid’s classes of Term 1 (Saturday April 2 and Tuesday April 5) will be PARENT’S DAY. All parents are invited to come along and join in the fun with your children on the mat.

WOMEN’S ONLY SPARRING WORKSHOP
Ladies, put Saturday afternoon April 9 @ 2.30 pm in your diary for our sparring workshop for women. Sparring against another person is a great way to test yourself and your technique in a safe, controlled environment. We will work through the principles and techniques of martial arts sparring (as opposed to fighting – there is a difference!) before facing off against one another. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never sparred before, this is a great introduction for both beginners and advanced students.

Email me NOW to register for the Workshop stephen@weststarmartialarts.com.au

WHEN: Saturday April 9, 2:30-4:00 pm
WHERE: Subiaco PCYC
COST: 20.00

If you require sparring gear please let me know so that I can order it in. You will be required to purchase your own mouthguard (available from most chemists or sports stores), you will not be able to participate without one. Women’s Sparring Pack (Sparring Gloves, Shin Guards): 70.00.
